Race, Culture and Sexual Orientation Workshop

Presented by Al Toney III

Most people recognize that there are stereotypes related to race and stereotypes related to sexual orientation.  In addition, there are stereotypes that link race and sexual orientation.  They speak to assumptions about who LGBT people are and how people of color relate to LGBT people.  Two of these stereotypes are:

  1. All LGBT people are white.
  2. Communities of color are more homophobic than white communities

Participants will learn how to facilitate difficult discussions, how to prevent resistance among staff, and how to respond to emotions stemming from cultural differences.  The format is very interactive and may include individual and group exercises as well as the use of PowerPoint, video clips, panels, additional speakers and resource packets.

Target Audience: The following workshop is designed to help participants examine these stereotypes, see why they are problematic, and think about practical ways to counter them.  Program managers, shift-leaders, supervisors and leaders of human service programs as well as line staff should attend. This workshop is best done with a smaller group – no more than 30 participants.

Building and Enhancing Your Team

Presented by Karen King

Much of our work life is spent working in team and collaborative environments.  Although working in teams is beneficial and generally produces significant positive outcomes, greater effort is required on the part of each member.  Team work does not come naturally to everyone and we must all work hard for it to succeed, especially in the individualistic American society.  Understanding roles, appreciating & respecting each other’s knowledge and expertise, having agreed upon shared goals, flexibility and fulfilling your responsibilities are all critical to team success.  Learn and practice strategies for building and continuing successful team work.

The format is very interactive and may include individual and group exercises as well as the use of PowerPoint, video clips, panels, additional speakers and resource packets.

Target Audience:  Program managers, shift-leaders, supervisors and leaders of human service programs as well as line staff should attend.

Best Practices for Creating and Supporting

Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s) and Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) Councils

Presented by Al Toney

Employee Resource Groups (ERG's), company-sponsored employee groups from traditionally underrepresented groups or those that support these groups, are said to be a company's best way to gain a competitive advantage, recruit new employees, identify and develop new talent, connect with the marketplace and create innovative solutions.  Fortune 500 Corporations across the globe find it extremely beneficial to provide ERG's for their employees, whether they are based on age, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, cultural heritage, Veterans or parental status, just to name a few.  Senior executives of the nation's leading companies meet regularly with their ERG's to obtain valuable feedback, while also allowing their employees the opportunity to demonstrate their skill and knowledge of the business.

Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) Councils are company sponsored company-wide groups of employees who come together to form creative and effective ways for approaching challenging situations pertaining to diversity and to improving an organization's Cultural Competency.  AK Consulting Services Inc. will provide your organization with extensive best practices, education materials, theories, Inclusion and Diversity training ideas and options, ongoing assessment tools, professional development ideas, toolbox and personalized consultation.
